Element Highlight

This week’s element highlight focuses on the beautiful depiction of Mary holding Christ’s body, otherwise known as “The Pieta.”

The word "Pieta" is Italian for pity or compassion - compassion we can readily see on the Blessed Virgin’s face. Michelangelo was not the first person to sculpt this scene, but his version is the one most widely recognized and emulated. The statue depicts a sorrowful Mary holding the body of her Son after he was taken down from the cross. Many interpretations are seen as being almost grotesque in their appearance. Our pieta is done in the renaissance revival style, similar to the famous Michelangelo one, to make it more in sync with our church's architecture. Dale Anderson found our statue at the same time and in the same place as our new back altar (more on that to follow soon!) It was used in a movie and was painted all one color. Dale was responsible for the restoration and repainting of the statue.
